I’ve been to this café over 20 times. The last time, the male waiter wearing glasses was very rude to us—he wasn’t welcoming from the start and displayed nervous behavior. He didn’t present the coffee cards, which is something they always do when serving coffee.
We accidentally left our empty water bottle behind, and instead of returning it to us politely, he chose to speak in a very rude tone, saying that they’re not our trash can and adding an inappropriate comment about our country which i did not understand completely as i just walked out. He speaks English very well—I know this from previous visits.
As foreigners who have lived in Japan for five months this year, this was the first time we experienced someone being so rude to us for no reason. We are polite, not just here but also in our home country and everywhere else.
This incident will not change how I feel about Japanese people or their hospitality, but it left us feeling very bad. I will never visit this café again. There are many other cafés where we are welcomed, and people recognize and appreciate our repeat visits.
Also noticed, after reading some comments, that this café seems to expect customers to order their cakes while having coffee. I can only eat sweets occasionally due to having insulin resistance. Expecting everyone to eat cake, without offering healthier options, feels exclusionary and limiting.
